Internet Marketing For Non-Marketers


Until a few months back, I had not really paid much attention to Internet Marketing (IM) and all the hoopla surrounding it. Despite the fact that I am an avid user of Google and use Google search for just about everything from home remedies for a toothache to finding the best karaoke bars in town to researching any major purchase, I hadn’t really given much thought to the “ranking” of the search results OR how ads relevant to my search show up on top of/ to the side of the search results. I didn’t lose sleep over how a business can use social media like Facebook or Twitter to increase revenue or what messages a website should convey. I come from a hardcore Finance background, having worked with multinational companies (but none that were very internet marketing active) and it didn’t seem to matter to me how the results came as long as I got what I was searching for.

And then, something changed in my life.


I quit employment as a Finance executive and teamed up with 2 ex-colleagues who were just starting a new IM venture. That was when I was thrown into the dimensionless ocean of internet or online marketing.

While I’m still a complete novice and just starting to take baby steps in understanding this realm, I wanted to share my learning journey with you.


I started by first understanding what IM actually means and entails.

Simply put, Internet marketing is the art of getting increased visibility on the Internet for your business and website. It is about channeling efforts to drive more traffic to your website and converting interest or leads into actual sales.

Visibility on the Internet can be improved in many ways:

WEBSITE – this is the starting point and the focal point of all Internet marketing. A well designed website with useful, meaningful content is the most essential aspect of all online marketing activities.

SEARCH – Since most Internet users first start a purchase cycle by searching for information relevant to the product/ service they are interested in, “search” related IM is extremely significant. This includes activities that are designed to have your website consistently reflected high up in the search results whenever a user is looking for products/services associated with your business.

PAID – All search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing) allow paid advertisements to be posted in response to user queries. By creating ads relevant to the search query, you can drive traffic to your website.

SOCIAL – Given the vast reach of a medium like Facebook (1 billion + users) and the significant amount of time a large majority spend on Facebook, it is an apt medium to reach out to customers with a comprehensive and appropriate social media strategy. Similar is the case for other media like Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest or Google+.

EMAIL MARKETING – A targeted and appealing email is sent with a specific purpose to a set of users who are interested in your product/ service. It is a powerful & cost-effective way of reaching out to more people interested in your offering and achieving higher sales.

The above are the broad categories of online marketing. The ultimate objective of all these activities, in fact, of all marketing, is to achieve higher sales while having a loyal customer base.

Now that we’ve broadly learnt (hopefully:-)) what Internet marketing means, our next logical question might be – “Does it work”? YES. But that’s a topic for another day…
